The New York premiere of a neglected masterpiece by a great British female composer.
The Cecilia Chorus of New York (www.CeciliaChorusNY.org) invites you to this unique concert. Experience the NY premiere of the towering, magisterial Mass in D by indomitable suffragette Dame Ethel Smyth. About its premiere, a contemporary critic wrote: “This work definitely places the composer among the most eminent composers of her time…. Throughout it is … masterly in construction and workmanship, and particularly remarkable for the excellence and rich color of the orchestration.” Opening the concert is a medley of scenes from The Maid of Orleans, an opera about Joan of Arc by Dame Ethel’s friend and co-conspirator Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky.

With barely a fortnight to go in the Six Nations, this Saturday sports a morning
and early afternoon festooned with Celtic battles:
9:30AM - Scotland vs Wales at Murrayfield
12:00PM - Ireland vs France at Aviva
The Welsh couldn't care less how they fare against the Scots because the
Principality's Big Day of Vengeance is the following week, when they host
England on home turf. Scotland's been nothing if not spirited this season,
so Saturday's AM promises to be a good match.
The Irish haven't been doing well of late, in spite of their good looks. We'll
see if Aviva will spur them on towards victory against a side whose propensity
is to produce gusts of brilliance.

The icing on the panettone: a new work freshly commissioned from emerging composer Raphael Fusco.

The lecture will begin at 7:15 and last no more than 45 minutes and afterwards we will have a short and lively question + answer session. The event is free and we will have a cash bar. All are welcome and after the lecture people can stay, have another drink, and connect with friends old and new.
What: "Gregorian Chant and the Authority of Rome: The Story of an Overlooked Italian Source from ca. 850" with Dr. Daniel DiCenso
Where: 526 West 114th Street. The closest subway stop, the Columbia University stop on the 1 train, is less than 2 blocks away.
When: Tuesday, December 18th. The lecture begins at 7:15pm.
More about the topic: Gates Cambridge Scholar Daniel DiCenso '05 (MA in Classical Studies) discovered an overlooked medieval manuscript - a missing historical link - that answers some old questions and raises many new questions about how Gregorian chant spread from Rome to the rest of Europe in the eighth and ninth centuries.
More about Dr. DiCenso:
Daniel J. DiCenso is Assistant Professor of Music at the College of the Holy Cross, where he has just completed a term as Coordinator of Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Daniel holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Cambridge (2012), where he studied as a Gates Scholar under Prof. Susan Rankin. Prior to his time at Cambridge, Daniel earned a BA in Music and Medieval and Renaissance Studies from the College of the Holy Cross (1998), an MA in Musicology from the University of Pennsylvania (2001), an MS in Education also from the University of Pennsylvania (2001), an MA in Classical Studies from Villanova University (2005) and a PhD in Education from the University of Pennsylvania (2005). DiCenso is currently working on an edition of the sources of Gregorian chant that survive from before the year 900.
